Spring… Allergies & Hay Fever
Ah, spring. It's one of the most beautiful seasons of the year, when the earth awakens, the temperature rises, and new buds begin to bloom. But unpleasant allergies and hay fever flare-ups are frequently associated with spring.
These 7 suggestions from our Pharmacists will help you avoid hay fever.
1. Pollen prediction
Check the pollen forecast daily, and try to avoid heading outside when the pollen count is high. This is usually in the mornings, early evenings, when it’s windy or after a storm. Pollen counts usually rise in the morning, and reach their peak by midday or early afternoon especially when it's windy or after a storm. This is the time of day that allergies are often the worst, since there is a high concentration of pollen in the air.
2. Pet patrol
Pets may be adorable and cuddly, but their fur frequently contains allergens that aggravate hay fever.
If at all possible, try to keep pets outside, or if you must keep them inside, make sure to give them a weekly bath.
Do not forget to wash your hands right away after stroking any animals.
3. Shower Time
If you go outside, there's a potential that the pollen on your hair or clothing will follow you inside.
After being outside, take a shower and make sure to clean your body, face, and hair well to get rid of any extra pollen you may have picked up.
Don't forget to wash your soiled clothing after you place them in the laundry basket!
4. Laundry Day
On days with a high pollen count, avoid hanging sheets since they could introduce more pollen into your home or bedroom.
If you can’t bear to leave the laundry another day, it can be dried indoors in a tumble dryer or on a clothes airer.
5. Flower Power
There’s a reason bees love them as much as we do; flowers are full of pollen!
It is best to avoid bringing in newly cut bouquets of garden flowers because of this.
To keep your house bright and your hay fever at bay, choose indoor plants or dried floral arrangements.
6. Vaseline Trap
Before you leave the house, dab a small amount of Vaseline over your nostrils to act as a barrier balm, collecting any pollen before you breathe it in.
We adore Vaseline for yet another reason!
7. House Pixie
To reduce allergens and keep your home appearing sparkly clean, regularly vacuuming floors and fabric sofas, mopping floors, and wiping surfaces with a damp cloth are all recommended.
